Good for you, keep speaking your truth. The saddest thing I have ever seen took place in my daughter’s classroom in 4th grade. It was my daughter’s birthday and I was a baker at the time, and had asked if it would be alright to demonstrate cake decorating to the class and also let the kids decorate their own cupcakes. A girl in her class was a child of JW parents, and also had cerebral palsy that confined her to a wheelchair. While everyone in the room watched me airbrush a picture onto the cake, she was turned away in her chair by the teacher, at the request of her parents, but she was turning her head as far as she could in order to watch. And of course, no cupcake for her. That is not spirituality, it is cruelty. I hope you have a big birthday cake full of candles, that you share with friends, every birthday for the rest of your life and I hope someday your family will share it with you, too. But if they don’t, you can create a new family without them, with people who love you for who you are.
